Hello, in this article I will tell you how to be a great forum admin, so that your members will like you, and in turn like your forum. Everyone loves the forum they post on to have a cool administrator that listens to their ideas and interacts with them.

Be active and interact with your members.

As well as running your forum, you should also take some time to post in your forum like a normal member. Interact with your members, talk to them and make friends with some of them. If you run your forum well and be friendly with your members, you will earn their respect. One thing though that you should not do when interacting with your members is say things that suggest your better than them, or boast because you own the forum. If you do that a lot of people will leave. You have to act a lot like a normal, mature member.

Don’t take sides, and be fair to everyone.

You must be fair to everyone, and sort out your problems in a mature way. If someone is saying offensive things to you (which doesn’t happen too often) you should not, under any circumstances, say offensive things back. Simply warn them, then if they continue to do it suspend their account or ban them. You should tell your moderators to do the same thing.

If you get into a position where you have to sort out a conflict between your members, listen to both sides of the story and be fair in punishment (if punishment is necessary). Don’t be afraid to ban or warn abusive members. It is a good idea though to warn them the first time they break the rules, and tell them if they continue to break them then their account will get banned. A lot of them will step into line once they know that the admin and moderators know what they’re doing and are willing to ban them if they continue. Be relatively tough but fair.

Listen to your member’s suggestions.

Let your members know that if they want to suggest a problem or an idea about your forum, they can feel free to post it on the appropriate forum topic or email/PM you directly. Consider all their ideas and talk to them about it if needed. If you think a member (or you)has a good idea for your forum, be sure to post a thread/poll about it and see what your other members think. If your members can have the forum just the way they want it, they’ll stay and respect you. Be warned though, don’t ask your members about everything, only the important stuff. If you do, it will look like you don’t know how to run the forum very well or make good decisions.

Be careful with moderators.

Moderators are normal members you select to help you run your forum and enforce the rules. There are different levels of moderators, so you can start someone off not having much power, then if they do a good job promote them so they have more power. Most moderators have the power to delete other members posts/threads, move threads, warn members and ban them.

You should only promote members to moderators if they are active, positive, friendly, fair, mature and responsible. If a moderator is taking advantage of their powers, don’t be scared to take them away, or your forum will become corrupt. One last thing, don’t have too many moderators. Make one at first, then only add more if the forum looks like it needs it.

Thanks for reading, and if you’re a forum admin, I hope this helped you!
