How to Make a Good Profile Picture for Social Networks or Dating Sites

You do not have to be a professional photographer, in order to come up with a great profile picture, for a social network or a dating site. If you do not have the money to pay a professional for that task, there are ways of doing it yourself.

A profile picture represents who you are. It shows a glimpse of personality, taste, and maybe interests or hobbies. It highlights you in a sea of people, differs you from the rest. A good picture puts you in the spotlight, calls for more attention from the viewer. That is why one representing photo can make all the difference, in being seen and noticed by others. That attention might come as a job offering, a new friend or a potential life-partner.

You do not have to be a professional photographer or a graphic designer, in order to come up with a great profile picture, for a social network or a dating site. If you do not have the money to pay a professional for that task, there are ways of doing it yourself.

Make sure you have a proper camera. Do not use a mobile phone for that matter. You need to come up with a high quality photo.

Choose a lighted environment. Being outdoors on a sunny day is best. Indoor photos can turn out nice as well, with proper lighting. Unless you know your way around Photoshop, or any other program that can fix the colours, it is best to strive for a good result right from the start. If you do insist on an indoor photo - light up the room with additional lighting.

Choose an interesting background. If you are outdoors, a breathtaking view is just what you need. In case you cannot find such a wonderful scenery - an interesting texture of a brick wall with some graffiti, a tree, or even a flowery bush - can do just fine. If indoors is what you prefer, find a pretty spot in the house. Do not show clutter, dust or a plain white wall.

Prepare yourself for the photograph:

- Comb your hair nicely.

- Wear nice, flattering clothes.

- Wear nice shoes.

- If you are a girl – wear some makeup, even if you are not accustomed to doing so.

Take note of details:

- Add some jewelry – earrings, necklaces and rings.

- Paint your fingernails (girls).

- Wear a flower in your hair (girls only!) or hold one in your hand.

- Wear a tie (boys).

Prepare to look your best, as if going to a high class party, or meeting someone important.

When all is set – find someone who has a good eye in taking photographs. If you have no one to take your photo, use a tripod, or place the camera on a high eye-level object, and take your own photograph. Experiment with different angles and heights, until you find a good spot.

Think of what you would like to show the viewer. It might be something you are good at – a talent of drawing, playing an instrument, cooking, surfing... You can present your talent by standing next to it, or being occupied with it. There is also a choice of showing your personality, through a facial expression and posture. For instance, hands spread wide sideways show of a happy and open person.

If you are making a dating site photo – be sure to show a closeup of your face and upper torso, and do not wear sunglasses! Seeing your eyes is important. They give a message to the viewer, show who you are.

Always remember - one of your most attractive features, is your smile! You do not have to be a model to look great. You can give the tone on your good features and personality. If you do not like your face or figure, find an angle that flatters you.

Make sure you are comfortable with taking the pictures. Do not feel stressed or anxious, because it will show. Choose a place that makes you feel good. Do not let anything in your way.

It might take some time to come up with a good picture. It might even take over a hundred shots of a camera, until you find the perfect result you have been striving for. Do not give up too quickly! Enjoy yourself! Being happy and having a good time, is the best thing to show in your pictures.
